Weekend review 23rd & 24th June

Saturday 23rd June

Over in the States, there were three Englishmen starting in one game in the USL on Saturday night as Tampa Bay Rowdies hosted Penn FC. Despite taking the lead, the Rowdies who boasted Joe Cole and former Millwall defender Tamika Mkandawire lost 2-1 against a Penn side who had Harri Hawkins in defence. The result meant Hawkins’ side are now just a point outside the play-off spots in the Eastern Conference.

In the Norwegian fourth-tier, Valdres made it back-to-back wins in their hunt for promotion thanks to two assists from Kyle Spence. The former Coventry City man, whose great aunt is famous Jamaican minister Madge Saunders, set up two goals as his side beat Skedsmo 2-0 to move up to fourth in the league.

Sunday 24th June

In the top flight of women’s football in Iceland, Rio Hardy scored again as her side Grindavík side drew 1-1 with ÍBV. The 21-year-old striker now has seven goals in five games in all competitions.

In Sweden, Netan Sansara helped his side keep a clean sheet as Gelfe drew 0-0 away to Frej and in the division below, Moses Makinde played the full ninety as his side Syrianska beat Akropolis 2-1 to move up to fourth in the table. Also in the third tier, Ryan Binns picked up an assist as Husqvarna battled to a 2-2 draw against Eskilsminne as well as, in his own words, the “keeper denying him an absolute worldie…”

In America, Bradley Wright-Phillips notched his eleventh league goal of the season as New York Red Bulls thrashed FC Dallas 3-0. BWP is now the second top scorer in MLS this season.

In the second tier, the USL, Paco Craig made it two games in a row that he has found the back of the net as the defender scored in Louisville City’s 2-2 draw with North Carolina.
