Hopcutt, Rooney & Ward: Weekend review 28th & 29th July

Saturday 28th June

Gary Noel made his debut for his new side SC Weiche but despite the presence of the English goal machine, Weiche lost 2-1 away to Jeddeloh. Noel is now in his third season of football in the German fourth tier, having scored 14 in each of his seasons so far.

Former Plymouth Argyle man Oscar Threlkeld will have to wait a little longer to make his debut for Belgian side Waasland-Beveren as he was an unused substitute in their first game of the season, a 2-2 draw against Chuks Aneke’s former side Zulte-Waregem.

In Sweden, Östersunds’ great run of form under Ian Burchnall continued as they defeated Elfsborg 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jamie Hopcutt. Curtis Edwards also played for OFK as they made it nine league games in a row unbeaten.

Over in the States, Paco Craig scored his third goal of the season as Louisville City beat Ottawa Fury 3-0 away from home. The defender has already beaten his goal tally for last season. Cameron Lancaster also appeared as a substitute for Louisville.

Sunday 29th June

Wayne Rooney finally scored his first MLS goal in his fourth appearance for DC United in a 2-1 victory. Rooney broke his duck by scoring against his former teammate Tim Howard. Jack Price was also on the losing side, with the former Wolves midfielder picking up a booking.

In the USL, Charlie Ward (pictured above for his former side Rio Grande Valley) set up the winner and was named man of the match as San Antonio beat Callum Ross‘ OKC Energy 2-1. Harri Hawkins also picked up an assist as the defender helped his side Penn to a 1-1 draw away to Charlotte Independence.
