Weekend review 13-15 July

Friday 13th July

Keanan Bennetts scored on his debut in a friendly for his new side Borussia Mönchengladbach as they defeated VfB Lübeck 2-0. Bennetts, who signed from Spurs earlier in the summer, gave his side the lead just two minutes into his debut.

Elsewhere in Austria, Borussia Dortmund traveled to Vienna to take on Austria Wien in another friendly. Jadon Sancho came on as a substitute at half time as his side won 1-0. Denzeil Boadu was also on the bench for Dortmund, having played 15 times for their second team in the fourth tier last season.

Saturday 14th July

There were two English goalscorers in the Swedish third tier with Laurie Bell being the hero for Karlslund in the north division. The midfielder popped up with a scrappy effort after a scramble from a corner in the 90th minute to secure a 3-2 win over Rynninge. It was 25-year-old’s third goal of the season and yet another important one.

The other goalscorer was Ryan Binns in the south division. His seventh goal of the season from midfield gave Husqvarna the lead but they would eventually lose 4-2 away to Karlskrona.

In Norway’s fourth tier, Kyle Spence was on the scoresheet again as he picked up a goal and assist to help Valdres to a 3-1 win over Vestfossen. Ryan Nelson also provided an assist in the match, with victory meaning Valdres remain in fourth place going into the summer break.

Sunday 15th July

All eyes were on Washington on Saturday night/Sunday morning as Wayne Rooney was named in the DC United squad for the first time as his new side played their inaugural game at their brand new Audi Field stadium. Coming on as a 58th minute substitute, Rooney assisted DC’s third of the game as they beat Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1. They remain bottom of the Eastern Conference, however.

Another former England international also picked up an assist but was also sent off. Ashley Cole assisted LA Galaxy’s equaliser in the first half but was then sent off for a second bookable offence in the 85th minute. It was the defender’s fifth red card since moving to LA. Luckily for Cole, his side would go on to score twice in stoppage time to win 3-2 away to New England Revolution.

Elsewhere in MLS, Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 12th of the season to help New York Red Bulls defeat Sporting Kansas City 3-2.

In the USL, former Brentford midfielder Charlie Adams was on the scoresheet as his side Real Monarchs beat Seattle Sounders II 2-0.
