Crowley, Lookman and Tuck: Weekend review 13th-15th April

It was a busy weekend for English footballers abroad, here are some of the highlights starting with Friday night…

A full round of fixtures in Holland’s second division, Eerste Divisie, meant a hectic start to English involvement overseas with no fewer than five players involved. Cambuur’s loanee Dan Crowley was the pick of the bunch as he scored during his side’s 3-0 over Dordrecht.

Elsewhere, two Englishmen faced off against each other as Aaron Nemane started for Go Ahead Eagles against Kyle De Silva‘s FC Eindhoven. In the end, it was the latter who came out on top, with De Silva coming on for the final few minutes of a 3-1 away win.

There was also an assist for Todd Cantwell as his side Fortuna Sittard beat Dec Bosch 2-0. The 20-year-old continues to impress since joining on loan from Norwich City.

In Slovenia, Matthias Fanimo was on the losing side as NS Drava lost to Bravo 2-1. Despite that, the former West Ham man still has four goals in six games since his move abroad.

Over in Asia, Lee Tuck scored for Malaysian side Terengganu to help them to a 3-0 win and in Indonesia, Danny Guthrie played the full ninety as his side Mitra Kukar won their first game of the season.

As you can expect, Saturday was even busier with at least 20 Englishmen involved across the globe, here are the highlights.

First, we start with two 7-0 wins. In Germany, defender Mandela Egbo, who has been around the first team lately, returned to Borussia Möchengladbach’s B team to score in the 7-0 rout of Westfalia Rhynern. Mason Mount picked up two assists as Vitesse thrashed Sparta Rotterdam by the same scoreline.

Jack Price scored his first goal for Colorado Rapids since his move from Wolves in a 2-0 win and Ashley Cole provided the assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to guide LA Galaxy to a 1-0 victory.

There was also a strong English involvement in Norway with fourth-tier side Valdres FK but watch out for an upcoming article for more on that…

Ademola Lookman was the star man on Sunday as he stole the headlines again during RB Leipzig’s 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen. The Everton loanee only came on at half time but he scored the equaliser in the 50th minute.

In Finland, journeyman striker Hakeem Araba scored his first league goal for Kemi Kings but could not prevent a 4-2 loss.

Across Scandinavia to Sweden, a Curtis Edwards strike helped everyone’s favourite Swedish underdogs Östersunds to their first win of the season, Jamie Hopcutt also picked up an assist in the win.

In America’s second tier, the USL, Jonathan Barden grabbed an assist for the only goal of the game as Saint Louis beat LA Galaxy II.

And finally, In women’s football, Toni Duggan came off the bench to score in Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Real Betis. Duggan’s side are now a point off the top of the table.
